Arctic Maritime Transportation Workshop, Maritime Event Center

This is a follow up workshop to one hosted by the Institute of the North in Iceland last December, under the auspices of the Sustainable Development Working Group of the Arctic Council. The product from these discussions will serve as an appendix to those proceedings, and complement the Arctic Port and Airport Inventory the Institute completed as part of this project.

Arctic Marine and Aviation Transportation Infrastructure Initiative
Nancy Hemsath, Institute of the North

This is the first public release and presentation of the Arctic Port and Airport Inventory. We invite comment, especially as it relates to capturing data about private sector infrastructure and mobile assets. How we accurately reflect these within this map is helpful for public policy discussions and decision makers.

9:30am - 11:30am

Small Group Sessions: Brainstorming, Review and Recommendations
Attendees will be able to participate in all three topics.

Current Activity in the Arctic

Moderator: Dermot Loughnane, Tactical Marine Solutions

  • How is infrastructure and equipment (often staged in lower latitudes) positioned to respond North-South?
  • How do East-West linkages affect response?
  • How is response scaled up and down or for multiple use needs?
  • How are resources mobilized based on existing infrastructure?

    Future Activity in the Arctic

    Moderator: Tero Vauraste, Arctia Shipping

  • Does the geographic distribution of resources match current activity?
  • What impact do emerging technologies have on future activity?
  • What infrastructure/equipment needs affect future activity?
  • What workforce – human infrastructure – challenges exist?

    Infrastructure and Investment
Moderator: Jim Hemsath, Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority

  • What legal, regulatory and fiscal mechanisms facilitate infrastructure investment?
  • How does transportation infrastructure contribute to the economies of northern regions?
  • To what extent do private-public partnerships become a factor in future investment?
  • 11:30am - 1:00pm

    Working Lunch

Groups Report Back | Drawing Conclusions

    1:30pm - 3:30pm

    Optional: Arctic Business Roundtable

Session Chair: Rep. Bob Herron, Alaska State Legislature

The Institute of the North invites you to participate in an industry

roundtable to discuss the connection between the Pacific Northwest and operations/opportunity in Alaska’s Arctic. This discussion will ask corporate leaders from the Seattle-Tacoma area to help us understand – given the many and diverse businesses that operate in the Arctic – where interests intersect.

A summary of this session will be shared with key stakeholders and decision makers, as well as incorporated into an Arctic Awareness and Outreach Campaign that will inform the recently-formed Alaska Arctic Policy Commission and the U.S. Chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2015.
